The Box Set

These pieces were written between 1933 and 1945 by Jews, rom, homosexuals, political dissidents, people with disabilities, and others who were deported, killed or survived the extermination camps. The result of 22 years of musicological research, this encyclopedia, directed by Francesco Lotoro and produced by the Musikstrasse label, is a global reference for music composed during the Shoah. Each of the 24 CDs includes a booklet in English and Italian with biographies of the composers, photos, notes on the works, names of the camps where the music was composed, and original lyrics for sung pieces.

Francesco Lotoro

Born in Barletta in 1964, pianist, composer, and musicologist. Lotoro has dedicated over 30 years to collecting and recording thousands of compositions created in prison camps. In 2014, he founded the ILMC Foundation, preserving an archive of 8,000 scores and 12,000 documents.

The Composers

Composers of all ages and backgrounds, often stripped of everything, found in musical writing a space of inner freedom. Their works, rediscovered and now finally heard, bear witness to a creativity capable of resisting the silence imposed by violence and history. These names tell the story of the power of art in the darkest places of humanity.
